There are certain characteristics and skills that every childcare provider should have.
Childcare training does not necessarily involve a formal education ending with a degree.
However, a degree focused on child development, child psychiatry and a license in teaching will
look good on a resume for those of you applying for a job in a public, accredited, childcare.
Other than that, experience with children and some basic medical knowledge, such as CPR is all
that is needed. Many childcare facilities offer hands-on-training and internship to students and
people interested in this field. This will allow you as the student to get a well-rounded view
and knowledge of what goes down in a business like this.
It will also ensure the safety and well-being of the children involved. Parents take a special
interest in their child's care. Even applying as a babysitter or in-home nanny requires some
already established skills and expertise, especially if the child is younger than the age of
five. Most parents when hiring a babysitter or nanny for their infant and toddler, even their
school aged children, prefer someone with certification in CPR and experience with children.
They often swing more towards older, mature women, who have had children of their own. In most
cases their neighbor's teenager is an option for a few hours on a weekend night to watch their
elementary school aged child. However, don't let this deter those teenagers who are interested
in babysitting and childcare. The most important factor in any parent's decision for their child
is going to depend on their impression of the person. Keep calm at the interview and just act
naturally around the child. It will help if you have experience with children in the age range
of their child. Also, CPR and first aid classes are offered to people of all ages. So anyone
seriously interested in pursuing childcare as a part-time or full-time career should really
become certified in these areas.
If you are considering running a childcare facility out of your own home there are some more
specific guidelines that must be adhered to. A home inspection by a licensed social worker will
need to be done and required. You will need to become certified to run such a business out of
your home and this will definitely involve classes and training in at least CPR and first aid.
There are also a variety of supplemental classes that are geared toward those beginning in the
childcare field. These involve mainly, ways of dealing with the children and the parents, the
necessary steps to setting up such a business, and innovative ways of running your business once
you are open.
Childcare training is simple in and of itself. It doesn't require years and years of training.
At least as far as working for a daycare center or running one, in some cases specific training
will be required, if only to make you a better childcare worker. Some basic characteristics
going into this should be a nurturing, compassionate, patient personality. Caring for children
should be trying at times, especially if they are not your own. You need to be aware of this and
be comfortable in dealing with situations that may arise
